Bespoke Garden Lighting for Cheshire Gardens
Cheshire is home to an exceptional variety of gardens, from established grounds surrounding period and country properties to contemporary homes with architectural landscaping and sophisticated outdoor living spaces. In gardens of this scale and character, lighting should feel considered, restrained and completely integrated with the landscape.
At Kirman Design, we don't believe in applying the same lighting layout to every project. We consider the architecture of your property, the scale and maturity of the garden, existing trees and planting, important views and how you use your outdoor spaces throughout the year.
We also consider how the garden is experienced from inside the house. Carefully positioned lighting can create striking views through windows and glazed doors, allowing specimen trees, planting and selected landscape features to remain visually connected to the home after sunset.
We then develop a bespoke lighting scheme specifically for your Cheshire garden, using carefully controlled illumination to reveal its strongest features without making the landscape feel excessively bright or overlit.
Your garden lighting design may include:
Uplighting for mature and specimen trees
Subtle illumination amongst established borders and architectural planting
Recessed lighting within steps, walls and paving
Discreet pathway, driveway and entrance lighting
Lighting beneath seating, benches and raised planters
Feature lighting for water features, sculptures and landscape focal points
Terrace, pergola and outdoor kitchen lighting
Wall washing and grazing to reveal stonework and architectural materials
Smart lighting controls and automated schedules
Mature trees can become some of the most dramatic features within a Cheshire garden after dark. Carefully positioned uplighting can reveal trunks, branching structures and canopies, while subtle illumination amongst surrounding planting creates layers of depth and shadow.
In larger gardens, lighting can extend far beyond the immediate terrace. A specimen tree, sculpture, water feature or carefully selected area of planting illuminated further into the landscape can create a distant focal point, drawing the eye through the garden and giving it a greater sense of depth.
Period and country properties can benefit from restrained architectural lighting that reveals stonework, brickwork and other details without overwhelming the character of the building. Around contemporary Cheshire homes, discreet lighting integrated into paving, walls, steps and planting can emphasise architectural lines and strengthen the relationship between house and landscape.
Outdoor entertaining areas require an equally considered approach. Rather than flooding terraces, pergolas and outdoor kitchens with light, we use carefully positioned illumination to provide practical lighting while retaining a relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere.
The aim isn't simply to make your Cheshire garden brighter.
By deciding what should be illuminated and, equally importantly, what should remain in shadow, we can create atmosphere, reveal the garden's strongest features and establish a sequence of views through the landscape.
The result is a Cheshire garden that feels elegant and considered after dark, complementing the architecture of the property while creating an inviting setting for outdoor living and entertaining.

Care at Every Stage
Good paving depends as much on what is beneath the surface as what can be seen when the work is complete.
Every paving installation begins with careful preparation, as the quality of the finished surface depends on what lies beneath. The existing ground is excavated to the correct depth before a robust sub-base is installed and thoroughly compacted to provide a stable foundation. Drainage falls are then accurately established to ensure rainwater is directed away from buildings and does not collect on the paved surface. A suitable bedding layer is prepared before each paving slab is carefully laid, aligned and levelled to achieve consistent joint widths and precise detailing. Once the paving has been installed, the joints are filled with an appropriate jointing material, the surface is thoroughly cleaned, and every aspect of the installation is inspected to ensure it meets our exacting standards.
At Kirman Design, attention to detail at every stage of the process ensures that every patio and paved area is not only visually stunning but also built to deliver exceptional strength, durability and long-term performance. Kirman Design will advise on your hedging needs. Smart Garden Lighting
Smart controls make it easier to adjust your garden lighting to suit different occasions.
Depending on the chosen system, your lighting may be controlled through an app, wireless switches, timers, sensors or voice-controlled devices. Separate lighting zones can be created for different parts of the garden, allowing you to adjust brightness, colour or timing independently.
You may choose a soft everyday setting, brighter lighting for entertaining or a more dramatic scheme for special occasions.
Automated schedules can also ensure your garden lighting switches on and off at appropriate times without requiring daily adjustment.

Lighting for New and Existing Gardens
Garden lighting can be incorporated into a completely new garden design or installed within an existing outdoor space.
Planning lighting during a landscaping project usually provides the greatest flexibility, as cables and fittings can be integrated before paving, planting and other finishes are completed.
However, many existing gardens can also be successfully upgraded. We will assess access, existing features and suitable cable routes before recommending the most practical installation method.

“We love our new outdoor space! We contacted Kirman as we wanted their design expertise on how to make the most of an unloved area of garden. The designs were great and the in person meetings were helpful and informative. The team on site during the build were so amazing. We are so pleased with the finished result! Kirman also worked seamlessly with another contractor, who were installing an outdoor office. Thank you!”
