Hedging and Hedge Planting in the Ribble Valley

A well-chosen hedge can create privacy, mark a boundary and bring structure and greenery to a garden. The right plants depend on the space available, the level of screening you need, the local conditions and how much maintenance you want to take on.

Kirman Design supplies hedging plants and offers professional hedge planting across the Ribble Valley, including Clitheroe, Whalley, Longridge and surrounding villages. We can help you consider suitable plants for your garden or boundary, whether you’re replacing an existing hedge or planning a new one.

Not sure which hedge you are looking for?

Have a look at the list below to give you some inspiration:

Choose a hedge to suit its setting

Before choosing a species, think about what the hedge needs to do. Do you want year-round screening, a softer garden boundary, a wildlife-friendly mix or a hedge that flowers or changes colour through the seasons?

It’s also helpful to consider the available width and height, how much sun the planting area receives, the soil and drainage, and how quickly you want the hedge to establish. These details can help narrow down suitable options.

Hedging for privacy and screening

Evergreen plants can provide a consistent screen throughout the year. Deciduous hedges change with the seasons, while beech and hornbeam can retain some of their dried leaves over winter.

The best choice depends on the screening you need, the space available for the mature hedge and the character you want for your garden. For advice on specific options, read our guide to fast-growing hedging.

“ Attention to detail and a personal service are important. From conception to realisation was quick and accurate: a fantastic result! I have already recommended Kirman Design to family and friends alike.”

Native and rural hedging

For gardens and properties that sit within the Ribble Valley’s rural surroundings, a native or mixed hedge may be worth considering. Species such as hawthorn, field maple, hazel, dogwood and holly can create a more natural boundary and provide seasonal interest.

Explore our guide to native hedging. The right mix will depend on your site, the appearance you want and the purpose of the hedge.

Hedge plants supplied and planted

We offer a range of hedging plants, with professional planting available across our North West working area. The hedging collection includes a variety of species and stock types, and options such as irrigation, bark mulch and protective stock fencing are also available.

The planting work required depends on the hedge length, plant size, soil, access and existing site conditions. When you contact us, it helps to include your postcode, the approximate length of the hedge and a few photographs of the area.

Looking after a newly planted hedge

Ribble Valley Deciduous Hedging

“I wanted a fantastic garden and that is exactly what we got. The service from Kirman Design was prompt, professional, thorough. I didn’t think we would ever be able to achieve what we did in the space we had but the garden is now perfect. We use it daily and I am so glad that we got you in. Our only complaint is that I cannot remember all the posh plant names! I appreciate the effort you spent getting things just right for us. Thankyou”
