Betula pendula, commonly known as Silver Birch, is an elegant UK-native tree valued for its light canopy, graceful branching and silver-white bark. It has small, triangular leaves with toothed edges, with fresh to mid green summer foliage and clear yellow autumn colour. Its open canopy allows filtered light, making it easier to underplant than many large trees.

 

This tree is well suited to large gardens, wildlife planting, woodland-style schemes, avenues and multi-stem features. It performs best in full sun or light partial shade and moist but well-drained acidic to neutral soil; tolerates poorer ground. For North West England gardens, allow enough space for the mature crown and assess drainage, exposure and access before selecting the final tree size.
