English Holly Hedging

A classic native evergreen hedge with glossy, often spiny foliage, providing year-round screening, excellent wildlife value and an effective natural security barrier.

Ilex aquifolium, commonly known as English Holly, is a traditional British evergreen with distinctive glossy dark green foliage. Its dense growth creates an attractive year-round hedge, while the typically spiny leaves make it particularly useful for boundaries where both privacy and security are important.

Small white flowers appear in late spring and, on pollinated female plants, can be followed by the familiar bright red berries that provide valuable winter colour and food for birds.

Why Choose Ilex aquifolium?

  • Evergreen for year-round screening

  • UK native hedging species

  • Dense, glossy dark green foliage

  • Spiny leaves provide a natural security barrier

  • Excellent wildlife habitat

  • Flowers provide value for pollinating insects

  • Female plants can produce bright red berries

  • Excellent winter interest

Why Buy Rootballed English Holly?

Rootballed Ilex aquifolium is field-grown and lifted with a substantial ball of soil retained around its root system.

This allows larger, established Holly plants to be supplied economically and is particularly useful where greater initial height, structure and more immediate screening are required.

Available Sizes

Rootballed English Holly is available in a range of heights, subject to seasonal nursery availability.

Larger specimens provide greater immediate structure and screening, while smaller plants can offer a more economical solution for longer hedge runs.

How Many Plants Do I Need?

Plant spacing depends upon the size selected and the density of hedge you would like to create.

Our hedging guide will help you calculate the appropriate number of plants for the length of your proposed hedge.

Root balled hedging is one of the quickest ways to create privacy, structure and definition within a garden. Larger, established plants can provide an immediate sense of enclosure while reducing the time needed for a new hedge to develop into an effective screen. Because root balled hedging can be substantial in both size and weight, careful consideration should be given to delivery access, handling and the route from the delivery point to the final planting position.

Both root balled and bare rooted hedging is covered in this guide.
