Rootballed Carpinus betulus

Hornbeam Hedging

A hardy UK native hedge with attractive green foliage, excellent tolerance of heavier soils and distinctive copper-brown leaves that can remain on clipped hedges through much of the winter.

Carpinus betulus, commonly known as Hornbeam, is one of Britain's finest traditional hedging plants. Fresh green foliage develops during spring and creates a dense leafy boundary through summer before turning yellow and warm brown during autumn.

Although deciduous, regularly clipped Hornbeam hedges often retain a proportion of their dried copper-brown leaves through winter, providing greater seasonal screening than many fully deciduous hedges. Its tolerance of clay, heavier ground and exposed conditions also makes Hornbeam particularly useful where Beech may be less suitable.

Why Choose Carpinus betulus?

  • UK native hedging species

  • Dense attractive green foliage

  • Excellent tolerance of clay and heavier soils

  • Often retains brown foliage through winter when regularly clipped

  • Hardy and tolerant of exposed conditions

  • Responds extremely well to regular trimming

  • Excellent for formal and traditional hedging

  • Valuable habitat for wildlife

Why Buy Rootballed Hornbeam?

Rootballed Carpinus betulus is field-grown and lifted with a substantial ball of soil retained around its root system.

This allows larger, established Hornbeam plants to be supplied economically and is particularly useful where greater initial height, structure and more immediate boundary definition are required.

Available Sizes

Rootballed Hornbeam is available in a range of heights, subject to seasonal nursery availability.

Larger plants provide greater immediate structure and screening, while smaller plants can provide an economical solution for longer hedge runs.

How Many Plants Do I Need?

Plant spacing depends upon the size selected and the density of hedge you would like to create.

Our hedging guide will help you calculate the appropriate number of plants for the length of your proposed hedge.

Root balled hedging is one of the quickest ways to create privacy, structure and definition within a garden. Larger, established plants can provide an immediate sense of enclosure while reducing the time needed for a new hedge to develop into an effective screen. Because root balled hedging can be substantial in both size and weight, careful consideration should be given to delivery access, handling and the route from the delivery point to the final planting position.

Both root balled and bare rooted hedging is covered in this guide.
