Acer campestre – Field Maple

About Acer campestre – Field Maple

Acer campestre, commonly known as Field Maple, is a dependable UK-native tree with a naturally rounded crown and excellent golden autumn colour. It has small, five-lobed leaves with softly rounded lobes, with mid to dark green summer foliage and butter yellow to gold autumn colour. It is the UK’s only native maple and is especially useful where resilience and wildlife value matter.

This tree is well suited to medium and large gardens, native schemes, estates, woodland edges and informal avenues. It performs best in full sun or partial shade and most well-drained soils, including clay, loam, chalk and sand. For North West England gardens, allow enough space for the mature crown and assess drainage, exposure and access before selecting the final tree size.

Buying a specimen tree is one of the quickest ways to transform a garden. It can provide instant height, structure, screening and maturity that would otherwise take years to achieve.

But buying a large tree is a little different from buying most plants online. The bigger the tree, the more important it becomes to think about how it will reach your garden, where it will be planted and what conditions it will have once it gets there.

Access through gates and passages, steps, overhead cables, underground services, ground conditions and even the distance from the road can all influence how a tree needs to be delivered and planted.

Don't worry — you don't need to work all of this out yourself. That's what we're here for.

This guide explains the practical things to consider before ordering and the information we'll ask you to provide. With a few measurements and photographs, we can usually establish what is required and make sure we arrive properly prepared to get your new tree safely into the ground.

You choose the tree. Show us where you'd like it. We'll help with the rest.
