Betula pendula 'Obelisk' – Upright Silver Birch
About Betula pendula 'Obelisk'
Betula pendula 'Obelisk', commonly known as Upright Silver Birch, is a distinctive deciduous tree valued for its narrow, upright crown, attractive bark and delicate foliage.
Unlike the naturally spreading form of the common Silver Birch, 'Obelisk' develops a more compact, vertical outline, making it an attractive choice for contemporary gardens, avenues, formal landscapes and planting schemes where horizontal space is limited.
Its fresh green leaves create a light, elegant canopy during spring and summer, turning yellow in autumn before falling to reveal the tree's attractive branch structure and pale bark.
Although narrower than the typical Silver Birch, it still requires sufficient space for its mature crown and root system.
Key Features of Upright Silver Birch
Growth habit: Narrow, upright to columnar crown.
Foliage: Fresh green, triangular leaves with serrated edges.
Autumn colour: Yellow foliage before leaf fall.
Bark: Pale bark developing characteristic Silver Birch markings with age.
Seasonal interest: Spring foliage, summer structure, autumn colour and winter bark.
Growth rate: Moderate to fast under suitable conditions.
Position: Full sun or partial shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained soil, including suitable clay, loam and sandy soils.
Wildlife: Catkins and foliage provide resources for insects and associated wildlife.
Garden suitability: Contemporary gardens, avenues, architectural planting and gardens requiring a relatively narrow tree.
