Pinus nigra - Black pine
Pinus nigra, commonly called Black Pine or Austrian Pine, is a large evergreen conifer with long, stiff, dark green needles held in pairs. Its crown is dense when young and becomes broader and more irregular as the tree matures, giving it a distinctive architectural presence.
This is a tree for a generous garden or landscape. It can grow beyond 12 metres tall and spread more than 8 metres, so check the available space and its distance from buildings, boundaries and overhead features before planting.
Growing conditions
Plant Pinus nigra in full sun and well-drained soil. It can grow in a range of soil types, including clay, chalk, loam and sand, but avoid ground that remains waterlogged. Once established, it can tolerate drought and exposed conditions.
Planting and aftercare
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the rootball moist while the tree establishes. The surrounding soil may be damp while the rootball itself dries out, so check it during dry weather. Mulch around the root zone to help conserve moisture, keeping the mulch clear of the trunk.
Pinus nigra generally needs little pruning. Allow its natural shape to develop and make sure it has enough room to mature.
Is Pinus nigra right for your garden?
Black Pine is best suited to larger gardens, parks and open landscapes where its mature height and spread can be accommodated. Its evergreen foliage provides year-round structure, while its size and form make it a substantial focal point.
It is generally not suitable for a small garden or a restricted planting space. If you are unsure whether it will fit your site, consider its mature dimensions before ordering.
