About Populus nigra 'Italica' – Lombardy Poplar

Populus nigra 'Italica', commonly known as Lombardy Poplar, is a distinctive, fast-growing deciduous specimen tree valued for its tall, narrow columnar form and strong architectural presence. Its closely ascending branches produce a striking vertical silhouette, while bright green foliage provides attractive seasonal interest, turning yellow before falling in autumn.

Lombardy Poplar is particularly suited to large gardens, country properties, parkland and landscape planting where height and vertical screening are required without the broad canopy of a conventional poplar. Its vigorous growth makes it useful for establishing tall visual screens, avenues and windbreaks, although its deciduous foliage means screening is reduced during winter.

This substantial tree performs best in full sun and fertile, moisture-retentive soil, tolerating a range of soil types, including heavier ground. Due to its vigorous root system, eventual height and tendency to produce suckers, it should be planted well away from buildings, underground services and restricted domestic spaces.
