Thuja plicata – Western Red Cedar
About Thuja plicata – Western Red Cedar
Thuja plicata, commonly known as Western Red Cedar, is a magnificent, fast-growing evergreen conifer valued for its dense, aromatic foliage, naturally pyramidal habit and impressive architectural presence. Its flattened sprays of glossy, dark-green, scale-like leaves provide year-round colour and substantial visual screening, while its reddish-brown, fibrous bark adds character as the tree matures.
Western Red Cedar is particularly suited to large gardens, country properties, estates and landscape planting where tall evergreen screening and strong vertical structure are required. Although frequently used for hedging, it can also be grown as an individual specimen tree, developing into a substantial evergreen feature with an elegant, conical crown.
This vigorous tree performs best in full sun or partial shade and fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It tolerates a range of soil types, including clay and chalk, but should be protected from prolonged drought and cold, drying winds. Its considerable mature height and spread make it most suitable for generous planting spaces rather than small domestic gardens.
